We spend a lot of time thinking about ourselves- our goals, our needs, our dreams, our desires, our faults, and our weaknesses. We stress over paying the bills on time, who didn’t call us back, a job opportunity that fell through, lost love, and the list goes on. By hyper-focusing on ourselves, we inhibit our ability to cultivate happiness in our lives by focusing on the “I” and “me.”
I often find myself turning to music for inspiration, release, and perspective. A new single that moved me recently was Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Ed Sheeran’s “Growing Up.”
“Half of it is advice about growing up. The other half is trying to figure out how to grow up myself.”
The song contains sound advice from the hip-hop duo and includes the secret to happiness. What is it? Learn to be selfless. To start? Embark on a daily commitment to do something selfless everyday. Forget about the to-do lists, the bucket lists, leave the could’ves, should’ves, and would’ves behind and find time each day to do something for someone else. Need ideas? Make your significant other a meal, take your dog for a walk, donate money to an organization, tip your barista, give someone your seat on public transportation, smile at strangers.
“Others matter more than you do, so ‘don’t fuss, dear; get on with it’.” –Audrey Hepburn.
